Farewell to Manzanar
By Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston & James D. Houston
Book Report Requirements
After you finish reading Farewell to Manzanar, choose two of the following writing topics. For each topic that you choose, write an essay to demonstrate your understanding of the topic. Each essay must be at least five paragraphs in length and must include specific examples from the novel.
1. Japanese Shame & Honor
• Explain the concepts of shame and honor in Japanese culture.
• How did the imprisonment in interment camps destroy honor and create shame for some of the family members?
• Include specific examples from the novel to support your ideas.
2. Racism
• Discuss the racism towards Asians in the early to mid 20th century in the United States as shown in the book.
• Give specific references to events that occurred in the lives of the Wakatsukis.
3. Jeanne’s Teenage Years
• Discuss the difficulties Jeanne (and other teenagers) experienced trying to live as Japanese Americans.
• Describe some of the conflicts Jeanne felt as she tried to be accepted by both her traditional family and the American Caucasian society. How was she “torn” between two cultures?
4. Farewell to Manzanar
• Describe the purpose of Section Three in the novel.
• Why is it important for Jeanne to return to Manzanar to say a final farewell?
• Explain in detail the significance of the book’s title.
You must have a cover page for your book report that includes the name of the book, the authors’ names, your name, class period, and the due date.
Each essay must have the topic title at the top of the essay. Essays may be typed or hand-written, but must be neat and orderly.
